Event Description: WHAT I HOPE HEAVEN IS LIKE

Have you ever boated more than 700 Smallmouth Bass on one single, two week fishin’ trip? Neither have I! BUT… I HAVE boated more than 600 Smallmouth Bass in that time period. “WHERE”?… You ask! “Lake Winnipesaukee, in New Hampshire” (Hereafter known as “Lake Winny”.) I answer. Believe it or not… This is an actual FACT! Although I love catching any fish that will pull my string… Everyone knows that my first and foremost love is a Smallmouth Bass. I have fished MANY Smallmouth Bass waters throughout the Eastern U.S. and much of Canada, but I have NEVER experienced Smallie fishin’ like Lake Winny.

I have fished Lake Winny for many years, first venturing there in 1986, with my good fishin’ buddy J.T. Thomas. We had a good map of the lake, an 18’ MonArk bass boat, a reliable Evinrude 150 and a little advance information from B.A.S.S. Members who had fished there and had answered my call for help. It took some lookin’ and some trial and error, but we finally nailed down some good locations and patterns. That first year I boated my largest-to-date Lake Winny Smallie of 6lbs. 5ozs. Lake Winny’s pristine; crystal clear waters offer some of the finest Smallmouth Bass fishin’ I have ever experienced. NOT for size (Lake Erie gets my vote for BIG Smallmouth) but for shear numbers of fish in the 2 to 4 pound range, with my largest Smallies tipping the scales in the 5 pound plus range. I am sure there are LOTS of BIG fish in Lake Winny, but they are not caught with great regularity. For me, the average days catch this time of year will be about 50 to 80 fish, but I have had an occasion or two where I boated more than the average, with 101 being my best day at Lake Winny.

Over the years I have fished there in the months of May, June, July, August and September, and have discovered that the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June are the best times for quality and quantity of those battling Smallies. They very well could be even better battlers than the Bronzebacks of the Susquehanna River? They jump and run and definitely will pull your string. The weather then is a little unstable, and you can expect rain, wind, sun, clouds and even snow and frost, but the Smallmouth’s are ready, willing and downright friendly then. I honestly have had days when I almost feel guilty of taking advantage of these beautiful creatures… ALMOST!

Some of my top-producing lures are (top to bottom) the Zara Spook; Zell Pop; Rapala Minnow; Buzzbait; Spinnerbait; Bomber Crankbait; Tube Lure; Salty Spider Jig; Senko Worm; Lizard and Yum Craw Pappy. Topwater action (my MOST favorite method of catching Smallies) is nothing short of unbelievable in the spring. These fish will come out of 20 or 30 feet of water to bust a Rapala Minnow, Zara Spook or Zell Pop lure. Natural colors are best, but this year we “Wrecked’em” on a bubblegum pink finesse and Senko worm. Take note that you will need a New Hampshire fishing license (and I advise you to get it on-line in advance) and that lead sinkers are not allowed there. CHECK ALL FISHING LAWS! I recommend light spinning tackle, 6lb. Power-Pro braid, mono leaders and good sharp hooks.

We always stay in a private cabin, owned by good friends of mine, in the Weirs Beach/Paugas Bay area. We met these folks years ago, while at the lake, and have stayed at their cabin ever since. There are dozens of cabins for rent, right on the lake shore, and you can obtain a listing, a lake map, and lots of information from…

There are also lots of campgrounds in the area, but be forewarned that there is a definite shortage of boat ramps and gas docks, so choose the location of your stay very carefully. Lots of good restaurants abide in the area also. A trip to Lake Winny would not be complete without a dinner at “Hart’s Turkey Farm” in Meredith. You can get a fantastic turkey dinner there, with all of the trimmings, which will satisfy even the hardiest of appetites. They also serve steaks, seafood and other great foods.

If you LOVE great Smallmouth Bass fishing, great scenery, crystal clear water and adventure, then you owe it to yourself to visit Lake Winny, in beautiful New Hampshire. It’s easy to get to with major highways connecting the south, east and west to the area. But, as always, there is some type of construction project going on and heavy traffic around the major cities.

When the good Lord finds me in his landing net, I hope every day in heaven is like a day at Lake Winny. That will truly be HEAVEN!

Good fishin’… Safe boatin’… Keep your net wet and…

Tight Lines,

Will Whitehead
